Unlock Your Inner Artist: John Cleese’s Take on Creativity

John Cleese the English actor, comedian, author, Oscar nominated screenwriter, producer, and presenter., has spoken extensively about creativity, particularly in his lectures and book Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide. His views emphasize that creativity is not a talent limited to a select few but rather a skill that can be developed through specific habits

and practices.

One of Cleese’s most powerful messages is that creativity isn’t reserved for artists, musicians, or writers, it’s a skill anyone can develop. He emphasizes the importance of creating the right conditions for creativity, such as setting aside uninterrupted time and working in a relaxed environment where ideas can flow freely. That’s exactly what we strive to provide in our studio, a welcoming, stress-free space where you can explore your creativity without judgment.

Cleese describes two mental states that impact creative thinking:

  • Closed Mode: This is the structured, practical mindset we use for everyday tasks and decision-making. It’s useful, but not ideal for creative exploration.

  • Open Mode: This is the playful, free-flowing state where new ideas emerge. It allows us to experiment, take risks, and think outside the box.

In our classes and workshops, we encourage artists of all levels to embrace the open mode, whether that means experimenting with colors, trying new techniques, or simply allowing yourself to play with ideas before refining them.

Many people believe they aren’t creative because they expect immediate perfection. Cleese challenges this idea, arguing that creativity requires time and the ability to sit with uncertainty rather than rushing to a solution. He also highlights humor and playfulness as essential elements of creativity. When we allow ourselves to laugh, take risks, and let go of fear, we open the door to truly unique and imaginative ideas. That’s why we foster a fun, supportive atmosphere in our studio, because creativity should be a joyful process!

Another creativity killer is falling into rigid habits. Cleese encourages stepping outside of routines to gain new perspectives, whether that means trying a new activity, visiting a different place, or simply changing up your usual approach. In the studio, we invite you to challenge yourself with fresh artistic styles, new mediums, and unconventional techniques to keep your creativity alive and thriving.

At the heart of Cleese’s philosophy is the idea that creativity isn’t some magical force, it’s a process that anyone can nurture. By creating the right conditions, embracing playfulness, and stepping outside of routines, you can develop your creative abilities just like any other skill.

So, whether you’re an experienced artist or someone who’s just starting to explore the world of painting and creativity, remember creativity isn’t about talent, it’s about practice, patience, and the willingness to play.
